The government on Tuesday launched 'Kalyana Kendra',  a 24x7 helpline for providing information related to the activities, programmes and for redressal of grievances pertaining to the Social Welfare Department.

Home Minister G Parameshwara, who launched the initiative, said that the helpline will ensure welfare and development of the downtrodden and weaker sections of society. He said that anonymous complaints too can be registered through this helpline.

Social Welfare Minister Priyank Kharge said that Karnataka is the first state to launch such an initiative.

He said that the Kalyana Kendra will help empower the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities with information and processes of the government benefits provided to them. “The helpline also makes it easier for the public to register their complaints regarding the functioning of the department,” he added.

The Kalyana Kendra will provide an instant registration number once the complaint is registered. The grievance will then be forwarded to the concerned government official. The details of action taken for redressal of the complaint will be provided to the applicants as well to the officers within a specified time, he said.

If the issue is not resolved within the specified period at the taluk or district level, it will be forwarded to the higher authorities till it reaches the director of the Social Welfare Department, commissioner and additional chief secretary and finally, the social welfare minister.

The department, which runs close to 3,000 hostels, plans to upload the daily biometric attendance of the hostel boarders through the Kalyana Kendra, to ensure their safety.

Officials will also closely monitor the reports published in the media pertaining to the department and take suitable action. The Kalyana Kendra helpline number is - 080-22634300 and the WhatsApp, SMS and Telegram number is - 9901100000.
