Discharge from TB Dam submerges structures in Hampi

Purandara mantap and other historical structures along the Tungabhadra river bank at the world heritage site of Hampi submerged on Thursday following heavy discharge from the Tungabhadra dam.

The reservoir's maximum level is 1,633 feet. There is water upto 1,631.01 feet at present. The inflow into the reservoir was about 59,625 cusecs.

As against its total capacity of 133 of water, the reservoir has 93.353 tmc of water currently.

At present, about 43,000 cusecs of water is being discharged from 23 crest gates.

The Purandara mantap, named after the great saint composer and remembered as father of Carnatic music, has been fully covered by floodwaters.

Other monuments including Salu Mantap located on the way leading to Kodandaram Temple, Koti Linga, Vedic Mantap where rituals are conducted, the ancient footbridge connecting Hampi with Anegundi and the Raghunandana Teertha Swami temple are also submerged.

The reservoir authorities may discharge between 50,000 cusecs and 1,50,000 cusecs of water very soon.

In view of the increased inflow into the reservoir due to heavy rain in catchment areas, the authorities have issued flood alerts requesting people in the downstream to take precautionary measures.
