Transgender elected as Gram Panchayat president in Karnataka's Mysuru

JD(S)-supported candidate Devika, a transgender, has been unanimously elected as the president of the Gram Panchayat and Sudha Revanna as the vice president at Saligrama, K R Nagar taluk, Mysuru district.

In the election that was held for the post of president and vice president, here on Wednesday, Devika and Lakshmi Somashekar had filed their nominations. As Lakshmi withdrew her nominations, Devika was unanimously elected as the president.

Speaking on the occasion, Devika, said that she will work for the development of the village, with the guidance of MLA Sa Ra Mahesh and other leaders.

It may be mentioned that Devika won the Gram Panchayat election from Ward No 7 of Saligrama.

She had contested from Ward 7, as it was reserved for women. She is a resident of Ambedkar Nagar in Saligrama town. She won with a margin of 30 votes, against her nearest rival.
