If all goes well, several Malayalees heading towards the City can have a place resembling home.
“Bhavan will be Kerala’s cultural and heritage centre and would promote Malayalam and Kannada classes. It will serve as a headquarters for all malayalees, who come to Bangalore. We have zeroed in on a land in K R Puram and the land acquisition process would be kickstarted soon,” said Reji Kumar, General Secretary.

Apart from this, the association also plans to create a Kerala-Karnataka gramam (village), which would spread across 25 acres of land near Hoskote.

Three months time

Reji Kumar said that besides building a club and providing other recreational facilities, 300 houses will also be built in the area, which would later be sold to Keralites.

The Kerala Samajam has set a target of three months to achieve this project.

On delay in organising the event, the general secretary said, “We were supposed to conduct this programme a month ago but due to the devastation caused by floods in North Karnataka, we decided to postpone the event. The association donated Rs 1 lakh for flood relief and also supplied health kits consisting of  - washing and bathing soap and tooth powder - worth Rs 5 lakh to flood-affected people in Bagalkot,” he added.

The association is also planning to build 150 houses for flood-hit people along with various other Malayalee associations in the City, he added.

Souvenir released

The event was inaugurated by Kerala Minister for Devaswom Board Kadannapally Ramachandran, as Governor Hans Raj Bhardwaj could not attend the event.

Other VIPs who were present on the occasion included former Union Minister C M Ibrahim, Krishnarajpuram MP Nandish Reddy, Oscar winner Resul Pookutty, Miss India World 2008 runner up Parvathy Omanakuttan, Shantinagar MLA N A Harris.

Souvenir of the association was released on the occasion by CM Ibrahim and the first copy was given to Resul Pookutty.
