Record sale of cotton at Gadag co-op society

Last Updated 10 April 2011, 16:59 IST

Nearly 20,000 bales of BT cotton and 4,000 bales of Jayadhar cotton - all sold-out - were stacked all over its 26-acre premises. As many as 5,000 bales of BT and 6,000 bales of Jayadhar variety were sold last year. When compared to the previous year’s record, the sales have doubled and the production of BT cotton has also gone up.

While a quintal of BT cotton is being sold at Rs 6,300, the Jayadhar variety is being sold at Rs 5,500 a quintal. Hence, the prices are in the range of Rs 11,000 to Rs 12,000 per bale.

The Society has received the produce not only from Gadag taluk and villages in the neighbouring districts, but also from faraway Hubli, Kundagol, Hangal, Savanur and Naragund taluks.

I S Angadi, the managing director of the Society, said several measures and facilities provided for the farmers and traders since last year had brought about such a huge success.

“When compared to other markets, the farmers get Rs 200 to Rs 300 more on selling their produce here, as there is no menace of middlemen. The farmers will be given the money within 15 days of the sale,” he said. Angadi said bearer cheques were being given to farmers to help them get the money instantly in the private banks in Gadag without
hassles.
