Rs 17.92 lakh illegal cash seized

Election Vigilance Squad and police on Tuesday seized Rs 17.92 lakh being transported without documents in separate incidents in Chitradurga and Bagalkot districts.

The squad stopped a four-wheeler heading from Chitradurga at a checkpost at Challakere. While checking, they recovered a bag hid among flower pots which had Rs 8.38 lakh inside.

Dilip Builders, Hyderabad, manager Amarnath, who was inside the vehicle, claimed that he had withdrawn cash from a bank in Chitradurga to disburse among labourers working for National Highway project as wages. As he failed to produce documents, the sleuths seized the bag and handed it over to the election officers.

At Honnakatti checkpost in Bagalkote, the rural police recovered Rs 9.54 lakh from a four wheeler. The police stopped the vehicle coming from Sangam cross and checked it. Those inside the vehicle claimed that the cash was collected from members of women self-help groups to be deposited with a bank. However, they did not have documents.

The police handed over the cash to tahsildar and asked them to produce documents for the cash and collect it from tahsildar.
