South Korea plane tragedy: Boeing 737-800s have witnessed at least 25 reported accidents since introduction

South Korea on Sunday witnessed the deadliest aircraft crash on its soil in decades after Jeju Air flight 7C2216 went off the runway and slammed into a wall at South Korea's Muan International Airport.

The aircraft had 175 passengers, as well as six crew members, all of whom, except two are presumed dead, fire agency working at the spot said.

As per a Jeju Air spokesperson, a Boeing 737-800 jet was involved in the accident.

Another Boeing aircraft of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (KL) had to undergo an emergency landing on December 28 (local time) after which it veered off the runway at Oslo Torp Sandefjord Airport. The Boeing lost control during the landing roll, after which it skidded off onto the adjacent grass terrain. No injuries were reported in the incident.

The twin disasters have once again raising eyebrows at the safety record of the Boeing 737 series, which has been involved in several high-profile crashes in recent years.

Since its introduction to commercial aviation in the 2000s, the Boeing 737-800 has been involved in at least 25 accidents, some of which have involved runway skidding, similar to the recent crash in South Korea.

These incidents, which have killed numerous people over the years, have also led to some of the Boeing aircrafts being written off.

Most devastating Boeing 737-800 crashes

• Gol Transportes Aéreos Flight 1907 (Sept 29, 2006):

  A brand-new Boeing 737-800, with 154 people on board, collided midair with an Embraer Legacy 600 over Brazil. The 737-800 broke apart, and all passengers and crew were killed in the crash.

• Air India Express Flight 812 (May 22, 2010):

  A Boeing 737-800 overran the runway during landing at Mangalore International Airport in India. The aircraft went off the runway, crashed through a fence, and plunged into a valley 200 feet below, killing 158 people, including 6 crew members. There were only eight survivors. The crash occurred on a tabletop runway, which lacked sufficient clear land at the end for emergency overshoots.

• Flydubai Flight 981 (Mar 19, 2016):

  A Boeing 737-800, en route from Dubai to Rostov-on-Don, Russia, crashed while attempting to land in poor weather conditions. All 62 people on board, including passengers and crew, perished in the crash.

• China Eastern Airlines Flight 5735 (Mar 21, 2022):

  A Boeing 737-800, operating a domestic flight from Kunming to Guangzhou in China, crashed mid-flight, killing all 132 people on board. The crash remains under investigation.
