Two jobless men have been arrested by the police for assaulting a woman software professional and her friend in East Bengaluru’s Indiranagar on May 9.

The Jeevan Bima Nagar police arrested Bilal Hussain (23) and Ali Ahmed (28), both residents of Nagarabhavi, and seized the
two-wheeler used in the assault. Police tracked them down with the vehicle registration number provided by the victims.

The incident had occurred around 2 am on May 9 when the complainant, Sunil Hosamani, and a female friend had gone to Empire Hotel for dinner.

When they were returning home, two men rode up on a two-wheeler, passed objectionable comments at the woman and pulled her hair. When Hosamani got off the bike and confronted them, they punched him and started gagging the woman. She raised an alarm, forcing the men to flee the scene.

Hosamani and the woman left the place but noticed a gang of seven following them. The gang waylaid and dragged both of them into the playground of a government school. The men hit him with a brick and pulled the woman’s clothes. Hearing her screams for help, a passerby rescued her. But the gang managed to make off with Rs 4,000 from Hosamani by threatening him with a knife.

Ajay Hilori, DCP (East), said the suspects had confessed to their crime. They were produced before the magistrate who remanded them in judicial custody.
