Student plants ganja to extort 50K from friend

Last Updated 08 December 2018, 20:43 IST

A student ganged up with six of his friends to extort Rs 50,000 from his rich roommate by threatening to report to the police that he was peddling drugs.

The suspects threatened Naveen, a BDS student at a city college, by claiming they are police informants. Naveen, who hails from Andhra Pradesh, has rented a house in northern Bengaluru’s Hebbal. He shared the room with a fellow student. The roommate realised Naveen has a lot of money and hatched a plan with his friends to blackmail him.

On December 1, the gang barged into Naveen’s house and planted a packet of marijuana there. Posing as police informants, the suspects accused Naveen of peddling drugs and threatened to file a case.

Fearing for his career, Naveen pleaded with the gang to spare him. The suspects agreed to let him go provided he transferred all the money that he had to their Paytm and bank accounts. Naveen did as told. Two days later, the gang demanded more money. But Naveen has had enough and filed a complaint with the jurisdictional Hebbal police on Saturday.

Police haven’t yet named Naveen’s roommate but DCP (North) Chetan Singh Rathore said: “We are on the lookout for the group of six to seven students.”
