Six women were killed, four on the spot, in an accident involving a goods vehicle and a sugarcane-laden tractor-trolley on the Gokak-Yaragatti Road on the Sankeshwar-Naragund state highway near Chiknandi Cross in Gokak in the early hours of Tuesday.

As many as 14 persons, a majority of whom are women, suffered injuries in the accident. They are undergoing treatment at two private hospitals. The victims and the injured are all residents of Madamgeri and Yaraganavi villages in Savadatti taluk in the district. According to the police, the accident occurred when the victims were returning to their villages after attending the funeral of a relative near Gokak Falls.

“The driver lost control over the speeding vehicle that brushed against the rear portion of a sugarcane-laden tractor-trolley coming from the opposite direction and toppled. Two women died on the way to the hospital.

The impact of the accident was such the bodies were scattered on the road. The victims did not get immediate help as the accident occurred during the dark hours.

The deceased are Gangavva Siddappa Hurali (30), Yallavva Balappa Pujeri (45), Yallavva Maruti Gundappanavar (40), Renuka Fakkirappa Sopadla (35), all residents of Yaraganavi; Kashavva Shivappa Khandri (70) and Paravva Kallappa Khandri (50), of Madamgeri village. The driver of the tractor has gone missing. The Gokak Rural police have registered a case.
