A day after the heaviest rain since 2005 brought the country's financial capital to its knees, leading to a wall collapse in which 22 people were killed, the waters receded from several parts of the city.
As people in low-lying areas began to pick up the pieces from Tuesday's rain mayhem, clearing their homes of the sludge that had come with the waters, aMumbaicivic body official said public transport was normal.
Lakhs of citizenscommutingon suburban trains had a tough time due to curtailed operations on certain routes.

The NCP alleged that the government's "negligence" was responsible for the breach of Tiware dam in Ratnagiri district, in which six persons were killed.
Calling for action against the guilty, Maharashtra NCP chief Jayant Patil sought to know after how manydeathswill the government wake up.
"The mishap occurred due to the negligence of the administration. How many lives will it take for the government to wake up?" Patil asked.
His party colleague Dhananjay Munde supported Patil over his "negligence" remark and asked the government to provide immediate relief.
"The incident again raises the issue of a structural audit. Wake up those in power!" Munde tweeted.
Munde, who is the Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council, had been raising the issue of carrying out structural audits of roads, bridges and buildings in the wake of wall collapse incidents, claiming lives, especially in Mumbai.
As announced by Central Railway, and looking at the forecast, suburban services now running as normal weekday schedule. Central Railwaysappreciate the support extended by commuters.
In a stern warning to airlines, the DGCA director general said on Wednesday that all aircraft should refrain from landing with "unstabilised approach" while experiencing adverse weather conditions and initiate a go around, non-adherence to which will invite punitive action.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) had in a communique on Tuesday asked airlines to make available sufficiently experienced crew in the cockpit and that crew rostering should factor in fatigue element associated with the operations during adverse weather conditions.
The circular, titled 'Monsoon Operations', comes as the main runway at Mumbai airport continues to remain shut after a SpiceJet plane from Jaipur veered off it while landing and got stuck in the adjacent grass area.
"We have also instructed heads of flight safety of airlines to include in their safety briefings to pilots, an express instruction to refrain from landing with unstabilised approach while experiencing adverse weather conditions and initiate a go around," Director General of Civil Aviation Arun Kumar said in his message.
He also said that safety cannot be compromised at any cost.
"All concerned are requested to strictly comply with the instructions. Non-adherence shall invite appropriate punitive action," he said.
A senior official at the DGCA told PTI that it is probing the incidents of planes overshooting runways.
India's financial capital limped back to normalcy Wednesday morning with public transport resuming services after torrential rains, that lashed the city since Sunday, subsided.
At 375.2 mm, the rainfall in the 24-hour period before 8.30 am Tuesday was the highest since the July 26, 2005, deluge in Mumbai. It had widely affected train and bus services while several flights had to be diverted from Mumbai airport and others were delayed for hours.
A senior Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation official Wednesday said that with respite from incessant showers, there was no more water logging in any parts of the city and suburban trains and BEST buses were running according to schedule.
According to a BEST spokesperson, out of 3,203 buses, 2,950 were plying on roads.
The Central Railway has decided to operate its suburban services in Mumbai division on Sunday time table, which means it will ply fewer trains, compared to weekdays when trains are run in full capacity.
"In view of IMD forecast of very heavy rainfall coupled with the high tide on Wednesday, Central Railway will run suburban services on July 3 in Mumbai Division as per Sunday timetable," the chief spokesperson of Central Railway Sunil Udasi said.
Special suburban services will be operated if the need arises, he said.
However, Western Railway's services were normal, giving much respite to commuters.
No major accidents were reported on Wednesday, except a fire in an electric meter box at Tagore Nagar in suburban Vikhroli (E). A BMC spokesperson said two persons suffered burn injuries in the incident and have been admitted to Sion Hospital.
Many buses operated by BEST broke down while some were diverted when rains pummelled Mumbai on Monday.
As rains took a break on Tuesday, bus services ran smoothly throughout the day.
The BEST has a fleet of over 3,200 buses which criss-crosses the metropolis and also operate services in suburbs.

A small dam breached in the Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra on Wednesday following heavy rains in coastal Konkan region of Maharashtra.
At least 20 persons from nearby villages are missing, reports reaching Mumbai said.
The Tiware dam breach has caused flood like situation in seven villages located in the downstream.
Ratnagiri district disaster management unit has reached the spot.
The NDRF has also been mobilised.
A dozen houses near the dam have been washed away.

In more woes for airlines, the main runway of the Mumbai airport is likely to remain closed for flight operations till Thursday as it will take more time to remove the SpiceJet plane that was stuck partially on the runway on Monday, according to officials.

MAHARASHTRA DGIPR: Mumbai Airport is not closed. As there is a skidding of a flight at the main runway, it is closed for operation. Alternate Runway is in operation & some flights are diverted to Goa. Because of this, some flights arerescheduled.
With incessant rain for the third day flooding low lying areas of Mumbai, a request was received from the Brihannamumbai Municipal Corporation to provide assistance to stranded Mumbaikars in Kurla area.
Teams from INS Tanaji and Material Organisation were immediately activated and were later joined by naval diving teams. The team from INS Tanaji encountered extreme waterlogging and abandoned vehicles, preventing their own vehicles from reaching the site. The team moved on foot, carrying safety gear like lifebuoys and lifejackets and was able to help elderly women and children to safer areas.
About 1000 people have been shifted to safety with the help of NDRF, fire brigade, Naval teams as well as local volunteers. The Indian Navy teams remain in full readiness to respond as and when required.
Teams from INS Tanaji and Material Organisation have been activated and have been joined by naval diving teams in aiding the rescue efforts in Mumbai.

Heavy rains threw normal life out of gear in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region on Monday.
The showers that started on Friday continued over the weekend and the intensity increased from the wee hours of Monday.
In Mumbai, waterlogging was reported from low-lying areas of Hindmata junction, Bandra and Parel.
Weathermen has forecast rains for Tuesday and Wednesday.
From the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai, there were flight delays ranging from 25 to 30 minutes, however, there were no reports of diversion and cancellation.
The maximum rainfall of 298 mm was reported in Dahanu in Palghar district.
The movement of trains on the Mumbai-Pune route on the Central Railway was affected following the derailment of a goods train in the Lonavla ghats.
On the Western Railway route, there was waterlogging in Palghar. Besides, South Gujarat also experienced heavy rains.
The suburban trains on the CR and WR - the lifeline of Mumbai, was operational but delays ranging from 10 to 30 minutes.
"Monsoon is active on the west coast and Mumbai and North Konkan is experiencing rainfall," said KS Hosalikar, deputy director general of meteorology, Mumbai.
Fishermen of the Konkan-Goa coast has been asked not to venture into the Arabian Sea for the next 24 hours as it was choppy because of strong winds.
As per private weather forecaster Skymet, Mumbai recorded 63mm of rains in a span of six hours from 1130 pm on Sunday to 05:30 am on Monday.
Heavy rains during the night and on Monday morning in Mumbai and its outskirts inundated low-lying areas, delayed trains and slowed down vehicular movement on roads.
Several local train services, considered the lifeline of Mumbai, were cancelled or short-terminated as a temporary bamboo structure erected for civil work fell on an overhead wire near the Marine Lines station on the Western line, an official said.
The weather station in Santacruz recorded 91 mm of rainfall in 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Monday, an India Meteorological Department (IMD) official said, predicting more showers in the city and in the parched Marathwada and Vidarbha regions of Maharashtra.
The vehicular movement from suburbs towards south Mumbai and the Bandra-Kurla Complex, where several corporate houses and private companies are located, was slow due to the incessant showers.
There was waterlogging at several pockets in the suburbs, due to which trains were running slow on the Central line as well, another official said.
In view of the heavy rains in Palghar district of Maharashtra and a rail track suffering damage near Lonavala hill station in Pune, 17 long-distance trains of the Western Railway (WR) and more than 10 of the Central Railway (CR) were cancelled in the morning, the official said.
Due to submergence of rail tracks at a few places in Palghar, some trains were also short-terminated, a WR official said.
A goods train derailed in the early hours of Monday in the Western Ghat section between Karjat and Lonavala, affecting the movement of several long-distance trains going towards Pune and western Maharashtra, a CR official said.
Some trains were also short-terminated and others diverted via Kalyan-Igatpuri-Manmad section. The shuttle train services between Mumbai and Pune were also affected, the official said.
Thousands of state government employees and private staff were not able to go to work, a government official said.
