US to send virus-hit India Covid supplies 'immediately': W.House

The United States will "immediately" make supplies of material to make vaccines, as well as therapeutics, tests, ventilators and protective equipment available to India, facing a Covid-19 surge, the White House said Sunday.

"The United States has identified sources of specific raw material urgently required for Indian manufacture of the Covishield vaccine that will immediately be made available for India," a White House statement said

Jammu and Kashmir reported its highest single-day Covid-19 spike ever on Sunday after the Union Territory added 2,381 coronavirus cases and 21 deaths.

Amid oxygen shortage, Jaipur Golden Hospital denies more admission requests

The Jaipur Golden Hospital in Delhi continued to scramble for a continuous oxygen supply and denied admission requests from more patients on Sunday, a day after it reported 20 deaths amid shortage of the life-saving gas.

The hospital currently has around 205 patients, out of which 60 are in a critical condition. Twenty-five patients need high flow oxygen.

Sunday lockdown brings Tamil Nadu to a grinding halt

Tamil Nadu on Sunday observed a compelete lockdown, the first during the current wave of the coronavirus pandemic, with operation of only essential services and roads were deserted as people remained indoors.

The second lockdown after a seven month hiatus saw closure of markets and all retail outlets, including state-run liquor stores and bars, while restaurants and hotels functioned for take away services alone.

Germany preparing 'urgent support' for Covid-hit India: Merkel

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Sunday her government was preparing emergency aid for India as the country struggles to cope with an explosion in coronavirus infections.

"To the people of India I want to express my sympathy on the terrible suffering that Covid-19 has again brought over your communities," Merkel said in a message shared on Twitter by her spokesman Steffen Seibert.

Twitter removes 50 tweets criticising Modi government's handling of Covid-19 crisis

Twitter on Saturday removed around 50 tweets mostly criticising the Covid-19 pandemic handling by the NDA government. Though Twitter is silent about the removal, tweets from verified accounts have been removed by the company.

West Bengal on Saturday registered the highest single-day spike of 14,281 Covid-19 cases pushing the tally to 7,28,061, the bulletin released by the state health department said.
