Jaswant-Advani meet sparks speculation

Last Updated 23 May 2014, 20:01 IST

The meeting between expelled BJP leader Jaswant Singh and party’s patriarch L K Advani at the latter’s residence in New Delhi has triggered fresh round of speculation in BJP’s Rajasthan unit on Singh’s possible reinstatement.

Chaos prevailed among the state unit, especially in Singh’s hometown of Barmer, over the 30-minute meeting between the senior politicians.

While speculation is rife over Singh’s re-entry into the party fold, the former union minister is also said to be discussing the political future of his son Manvendra, an MLA in Rajasthan Assembly who was suspended following Singh’s nomination in Barmer Lok Sabha constituency as an independent.

Singh was suspended along with his son after he fielded himself against the official BJP candidate Col Sonaram Chaudhary. Manvendra was also suspended from the national executive following reports that he campaigned for his father.

Sources said Jaswant is trying to repair the damage done to his son’s political career following his loss in the Lok Sabha elections and has begun his effort to mend fences at the residence of the BJP patriarch.

Meanwhile, BJP’s newly elected MP from Barmer Col Sonaram Chaudhary has said the party would not entertain Jaswant who has made so many mistakes.

“Jaswant Singh contested (the Lok Sabha elections) against his party and defamed its leaders including (national president) Rajnath Singh and (Rajasthan chief minister) Vasundhara Raje in his speeches. The party had taken disciplinary action against him twice and I do not think the party would entertain him any more,” Col Chaudhary said.
