If things go according to plan, relatives of patients and doctors at AIIMS are likely to face less inconvenience while attending on the injured admitted at the hospital.

Emergency Display Information System (EDIS), a electronic patient status board put up at the casualty, will display information as well as detailed content regarding patient injury status and criticality, clinical plans and disposition status, doctors teams, status of their hospital stay, health status and their expected care plans among other things.

A brain child of the chief of Trauma Centre Dr M C Misra and associate professor of neurosurgery Dr Deepak Agrawal, EDIS was conceived after doctors found there was devoid of coordination and right communication between doctors team and patient's relatives while taking care of patient in hospital emergency departments. “The idea behind it is to streamline patient care system in the emergency. There is lot of chaos in an emergency.

There are times when we have to attend 25 to 50 patients in an emergency. This display system is similar to the facility in the airports that display information related to flights,” Agrawal said.

“Once the information is on the display screen, relatives and attendants know the status of the trauma patients. Doctors on shift duties can find out which patient is waiting for them and what next action needs to be done if they view the EDIS,” Agrawal said.

Patient details are upgraded by a team of nurses and the software for the EDIS facility has been linked to the registration software too.The mechanism will check for complaints of negligence from relatives regarding to patient care. “Suppose, a doctor has prescribed for an X-ray of an injured, the time taken to accomplish it can tell us about the waiting period.

This facility can point out any negligence on the part of medical staff, if any," Agrawal said.
