<p>House owners in south Delhi can once again deposit property tax through personal cheque, apart from cash, demand draft and banker’s cheque. <br /><br /></p>.<p>The decision comes in the wake of complaints filed by property owners after the three municipal corporations said they will stop accepting property tax payment through cheques, starting July 1.<br /><br />“Seeing the problems faced by property owners, the commissioner has approved a proposal of the assessment and collection department to this effect for the current financial year,” said a South Delhi Municipal Corporation official.<br /><br />However, officials have warned that the corporation will take action against defaulters if cheques are dishonoured. In fact, cheque bounce was the reason why civic agencies had decided to accept property tax payments only through demand draft, cash or online.<br /><br />According to officials, cheques worth Rs 12 crore bounce every year. While only Rs 10 crore are recovered, the process is long and cumbersome.<br /><br />“Several cheques bounce and civic bodies have to impose fines. The whole process complicates tax payment, and so it was decided in June to discontinue cheques as a mode of payment starting July 1,” a corporation official said.<br /><br />After the Municipal Corporation of Delhi was trifurcated this year, thousands of cheques were dishonoured because they were issued in the name of the erstwhile and unified MCD.<br /><br />Penalty for wrong tax info<br /><br />The south corporation has decided to impose penalty on property owners for wrong assessment of property tax under the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act. <br /><br />“Those who deliberately evade property tax will be punished. The penalty can be up to 30 per cent of the difference in actual assessment,” a corporation official said. <br /></p>
