The Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Cooperative (Campco) Limited, has cautioned stakeholders to keep a watch on the illegal import of poor quality arecanuts from Myanmar.

A press release from Campco President S R Sathischandra said that the entry of poor quality of arecanuts from Myanmar is in news again. Inferior quality arecanuts are entering India in secret agreement with the traders and farmers bordering the country.

He said the adulteration of inferior quality arecanuts with high-quality arecanuts grown in the country and an attempt to sell it in the domestic market will result in a drop in the price of arecanuts, he cautioned. “Illegal entry of arecanuts is a loss to the country’s exchequer and will destabilise the arecanut market in the country,” he added.

The Campco has urged its stakeholders not to engage in such illegal activities and try to stabilise the arecanut market. He also urged people to inform the concerned authorities of such illegal practices and help initiate suitable action. Campco is committed to protect arecanut growers.
