To attract global players in the IT hardware manufacturing sector, the Centre on Wednesday approved a production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for companies producing laptops, tablets, all-in-one PCs and servers.
The Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi cleared the about Rs 7,350 crore PLI scheme for IT hardware that would cover laptops, tablets, all-in-one PCs and servers, IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad told reporters after the Cabinet meeting.
The scheme proposes a production linked incentive to boost domestic manufacturing and attract large investments in the value chain of these IT hardware products, spur exports and create new jobs opportunities, Prasad added.
The approval of the PLI scheme for these IT hardware gadgets comes after the Cabinet last week cleared a similar scheme worth Rs 12,195 crore for telecom equipment manufacturing.
The scheme announced aims to cut down India's dependence on the import of these products.
Incentives worth Rs 7,350 crore will be provided over four years for manufacturing of these products in India. Production worth Rs 3.26 lakh crore and exports worth Rs 2.45 lakh crore are estimated over the four-year timeline, said a statement.
The PLI scheme for IT hardware expects to bring additional investments of Rs 2,700 crore, earn direct and indirect revenue around Rs 15,760 crore and create 1.80 lakh jobs in four years, the statement added.
