WhatsApp to block messenger app users, delete backup who disagree with new policy

After 120 days, as per WhatsApp policy on inactive accounts, the latter gets deleted permantely and thus erasing everything including message history and cloud backups

Ever since WhatsApp rolled out the revised terms and conditions of the user privacy policy in early January 2021, it has been facing flak for not offering users the option to reject it and continue to use the application.

The company said it intends to track and store conversation and transaction details of consumers communicating with business/enterprise owners on WhatsApp. This controversial revision of user privacy policy is applicable in select countries including India, while WhatsApp maintains safer guidelines in European Union.

Instead of taking corrective measures, the Facebook-owned company gave an ultimatum that users who don't comply with their terms are free to uninstall the messenger app.
The disparity drew a lot of criticism from not just security experts but also consumers and this led to mass migration to alternatives such as Telegram and Signal.

Fearing massive attrition, WhatsApp launched a big ad campaign on print media and TV to reassure consumers that the conversation between private individuals such as between friends and family will always have end-to-end encryption. And, it extended the earlier deadline from February 8 to May 15.

Now, in the revamped FAQ page related to the revised user privacy guideline, WhatsApp has clearly stated that after May 15, people who don't accept the terms will be able to only receive calls and notifications, but won't be able to read or send messages on the app.

Here's what the WhatsApp FAQ page reads

"To give you enough time to review changes at your own pace and convenience, we’ve extended the effective date to May 15th. If you haven’t accepted by then, WhatsApp will not delete your account. However, you won't have the full functionality of WhatsApp until you accept. For a short time, you'll be able to receive calls and notifications, but won't be able to read or send messages from the app."

Before May 15, users can export their chat history on Android or iPhone, and download a report of the account.
