JOIN USEven four days after the expiry of the 45-day deadline for banks to instal burglar alarms and CCTV cameras at their ATM kiosks, many are yet to comply with the order.
Police Commissioner Raghavendra H Auradkar on Thursday told reporters he had already instructed the police to carry out a survey on the ATM kiosks in their jurisdiction which do not have a security guard, burglar alarm and CCTV camera. “Details are expected in a couple of days. There is also a meeting scheduled with the representatives of all the banks in the City and we will discuss the next step. Till now, only State Bank of Mysore and HDFC Bank have started the process of installing alarms and cameras.”
He said deploying a security guard was as important as the camera and alarm.When asked what action would be taken against ATM kiosks that have not followed the rule, a senior police officer said the nature of action would be decided only after a meeting with the bankers.
Girl drowns
A 6-year-old girl allegedly drowned after falling into an open sump at a construction site in Ganesh Nagar, Kodigehalli, on Wednesday night.
According to police, Mageshwari and her parents, natives of Tamil Nadu, had come to the City three months ago and were working as construction labourers. They were staying in a makeshift shed in Ganesh Nagar. On Wednesday evening, Mageshwari went to relieve herself and did not return home till 9 pm. The panicked parents started looking for her but in vain.
They informed the police about their missing daughter. On Thursday morning, police found the body of Mageshwari floating in a sump 80 metres from the shed.
The open sump is located at a site owned by Lalithamma. Lalithamma told the police that the construction of the house was stopped for the past 15 days because of non-availability of sand due to the lorry strike. Kodigehalli police have registered a case of negligence against Lalithamma.
Vehicles burnt
Unidentified men torched four two-wheelers parked in front of houses in Ist Block Rajajinagar on Wednesday night.
According to police, the bikes belonging to Anil, Sujjan, Raj Gowda and Raghu had been parked in front of their houses. Around 11.30 pm, a few antisocials set the vehicles on fire and fled.
Neighbours who noticed the burning motorcycles alerted their owners. By the time they informed the police, the bikes were gutted. Rajajinagar police have taken up the case.
Social worker, cabbie held
Vijayanagar police have arrested a local social worker and a cab driver for a robbery and have recovered 74 grams of gold ornaments from the two. Social worker Susheelamma is accused of getting her friend Saraswathi robbed at her house through the cab driver, a common acquaintance to both.
Susheelamma, working with a women’s group, had been friends with Saraswathi, a resident of SVJ Layout, Moodalapalya. The two families had often been on trips in Prasad’s cab.
Police said a masked man had broken into the house of Saraswathi on December 19 night last year, threatened her at knifepoint and robbed her of Rs 10,000 in cash and 74 grams of jewellery. Vijaynagar police had been questioning friends and acquaintances of Saraswathi and her family and came across Prasad who confessed to the crime. Police said Susheelamma and Saraswathi had developed differences over monetary issues and Susheelamma got Saraswathi robbed of her valuables as a revenge.
