BBMP to get drains flood alert app

Last Updated 15 December 2018, 14:24 IST

The BBMP will soon get a flood alert and control system app that will alert about the flooding stormwater drains.

The app, developed by the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) along with Indian Institute of Science (IISc), will ease the civic body’s long-pending woes of overflowing drains.

According to Dr Subha Avinash, project scientist, hydrology, KSNDMC, “We are developing an app that will identify the critical and dangerous points of overflowing. This will help to know the real-time updates of critical and dangerous points of stormwater drains, where water will overflow.”

The app would be later handed over to the Palike, she added.

A senior BBMP official said the geo-coordinates of the stormwater drains would be mapped on geographic information system (GIS) that will be maintained by contractors.

This is the part of the annual maintenance contract system, which the civic body has recently brought in with an aim to build a day-to-day record of ongoing construction and maintenance work of SWDs.
