Two sisters employed as pourakarmikas (municipal workers) died in a road accident in North Bengaluru on Wednesday morning, according to police.

Gowramma, 37, and Mariyamma, 44, from Doddabettahalli, Vidyaranyapura, were killed in a head-on collision between an auto-rickshaw and a motorbike on Tindlu Main Road near Vidyaranyapura around 6.30 am, police said.

The women were riding pillion on the motorbike with Shivalinga, Gowramma's son. Due to the impact of the collision, the women fell off the two-wheeler and were subsequently run over by the auto-rickshaw. Eyewitnesses rushed the women as well as Shivalinga to a hospital. The women were declared brought dead.

Auto driver injured

The auto-rickshaw driver, Rachaiah, 57, was also injured in the accident.

The jurisdictional Yelahanka traffic police initially presumed that he had fled the spot but he later approached them and narrated what had happened.

Police have, however, registered a case of causing death by negligence against him and are carrying out further investigations, a senior officer said from the Yelahakanka police station.

Shivalinga was dropping off his mother and aunt at their workplace when the accident occurred. Neither he nor the women wore helmets, according to police.
