A private hospital in the city has carried out four organ transplants within a span of 24 hours.

The transplants, made at Manipal Hospitals on Old Airport Road between March 10 and 11, involved two kidney transplants, an emergency cadaver kidney transplant, and a heart transplant from a cadaver.

Manipal Hospitals said one cadaver kidney was transported from Mysuru. It was from a 28-year-old man who suffered severe head trauma in a road accident, which resulted in him being declared brain dead. The transplantation was led by Dr Deepak Dubey, HOD, urology, and aided by Dr Shivshankar and Dr Somanna.

The cadaver heart was from a 21-year-old woman who was declared brain dead at Aster Hospital. The heart was transported in a green corridor from Aster to Manipal and the surgery was conducted under a team led by Dr Devanand. “The recipient was a young woman who had been waiting for a heart,” Manipal Hospitals said.

Meanwhile, there were already two other patients scheduled for live kidney transplantation on the mornings of March 10 and March 11. One recipient was a 17-year-old boy who had been on hemodialysis. His father donated a kidney. The boy subsequently underwent native nephrectomy and kidney transplantation in the same sitting.

The last recipient was a 27-year-old man whose kidneys had failed due to high blood pressure. He underwent renal transplantation with the donor being his father.
Manipal Hospitals said Jeevasarthakathe was instrumental in coordinating the transplants.
