Byelections to the Binnypet ward (number 121) went off peacefully on Monday. Polling at 37 voting centres across the ward was slow, and was held in Binnypet, Gopalapura, Magadi Road and Shankarappa Garden areas. The ward reported a 43.54% voter turnout.

Of the 37 polling booths, 30 were regular booths, while seven of them were considered critical.

Suresh Kumar, a Congress worker, was hospitalised with injuries after a fight broke out between Congress and JD(S) supporters on Sunday night, allegedly over the distribution of cash. A case has been filed in the KP Agrahara police station in this regard.

The bypolls were necessitated by the death of corporator Mahadevamma in January. The JD(S)' Aishwarya B N, also the daughter of Mahadevamma, and Congress' Vidya Shashikumar were the two major contenders in the bypolls.
