Bluetooth device sends Metro staff into tizzy

Last Updated 17 July 2018, 09:28 IST

The Indiranagar police are looking into an incident where a bluetooth device was found fixed under a platform seat at the Indiranagar Metro station during the weekend.

A CCTV camera captured a Metro employee placing the device under the seat on Saturday. The device was spotted by senior Metro officials on Platform 2 around 4.50 pm the same day.

Faruque Hossain, an official, alerted the security in-charge, Devaiah, who rushed to the spot and inspected the gadget and later verified the CCTV footage. A detailed verification of the CCTV footage revealed Vennankandy Saron (24) a Metro employee deputed at the MG Road Metro station, had placed the device. Metro officials handed over Saron and the device to the police.

The Indiranagar police registered a case against Saron under section 62 of the Metro Railways (Operation and Maintenance) Act.

While some Metro staff suspected it to be an explosive, others thought it was a spy camera. The device, which looked like a beacon, had senior Metro officials wondering what a Metro employee could possibly be doing with such a contraption.

Meanwhile, the police ascertained that the device was a Google-certified Bluetooth 5.0 Eddystone beacon. “The device is a booster for signals enhancing bluetooth and WiFi connectivity. Upon inquiries, the employee revealed that he was using the device for his phone which was outdated,” said a senior police officer adding, “We had taken up a case earlier as the complaint was lodged by BMRCL officials themselves, but the investigation revealed otherwise.”
