An auto driver booked for drunk driving and without uniform smashed a glass bottle on the head of a 56-year-old Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) attached to Yeshwanthpura traffic police station.

On August 29, ASI Thimmarayappa was on duty at the MEI junction when he spotted the driver of an auto-rickshaw without uniform. He stopped the vehicle and wrote a ticket for offence, when the driver, identified as Santhosh, argued with the cop.

The assistant sub-inspector of police smelt alcohol on the driver and asked if he was drunk. Santhosh turned more abusive at the question.

When Thimmarayappa checked his alcohol levels with alcoholmeter, he found the driver’s blood alcohol level was 168 mg/dL.

The ASI issued a police note on him. He seized Santhosh’s auto and asked him to pay the fine at the court.

Santhosh left the spot only to return an hour later with an empty bottle searching for the ASI. The cop was managing traffic at SBI ATM at RMC Yard bus stop, when Santhosh smashed the bottle on the back of the ASI’s head, hurting the policeman for penalizing him.

The cop and a few of them managed to hold back Santhosh from escaping the spot and handed him to the Yeshwanthpura law and order police.

The auto driver was booked under IPC section 353 - assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharging his duties and 332 - voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from discharging his duty.
