Lalbagh getting a facelift for Independence Day

Last Updated 28 June 2017, 19:25 IST

The horticulture department has started preparations for Independence Day celebrations by making the entrances of Lalbagh as beautiful as the interior.

The city’s famed botanical garden hosts the flower exhibition on account of Independence Day every year.

Oak trees, bamboo frames, red and blue flowers, Mexican grass and even bricks will be part of the decoration.

M Jagadish, joint director of the department, said, “A small garden will come up at the U-shaped area between the east entrance and the exit. The idea is to make every view of the visitor a memorable experience.”

He said the work has already started on the east entrance by installing decorative lamp posts. “We are studying many themes before finalising on something that fits our purpose. Rare plants will be brought from Hyderabad for the area near the entrance,” he added.

Jagadish said Rs 50,000 has been spent for preparing the ground, but the final expenditure will be clear once they zero in on the decorative plants. “We want to finish the works by the end of July so that we are ready for Independence Day celebrations,” he said.
