Higher Education Minister G T Deve Gowda admitted on Monday that only after the governor's intervention did the government become aware of the irregularities that have taken place in VTU.

“The governor has formed a one-man committee to investigate into the matter. The registrar has also moved the high court. Our government will act upon the order of the governor. Only after the governor's intervention did we get to know about the irregularities in VTU,” Gowda told reporters.

The minister was addressing reporters after the inauguration of the 3rd Annual Convention Of Indian Council For Business Education and International Conference on ‘Global Entrepreneurship: Emerging Opportunities And Challenges’ organised by the Bangalore University’s Commerce Department.

Gowda also stressed on the need for skill development and employment cell in universities. “Besides the regular curriculum, colleges and universities should also focus on skill development, for which skill development cells should be formed. To maintain records on placements it's mandatory to have an employment cell in all the colleges,” he said.

Rs 5k hike

Gowda said that in the upcoming state Budget, the government would give importance to filling vacant positions in universities. “We are planning to increase salary by Rs 5000 for guest faculties to fill up the vacant positions in the upcoming state budget. We will also focus on improving the engineering colleges,” he said.
