A 35-year-old autorickshaw driver was killed and four others injured when an over-speeding canter ran over the auto on 8th mile on Tumakuru Road in the early hours of Saturday.

The police said the deceased is Pundalika Harsha, a resident of Thigalarapalya.

The injured are Sabanna, Sharanappa, Huliyamma and canter driver Ambarisha, all of whom have been admitted to a private hospital.

The police said Harsha was heading towards Saptagiri Hospital on Hesaraghatta Road to admit Huliyamma, who was unwell.

When the auto driver attempted a U-turn at the 8th mile, a speeding canter heading towards Tumakuru collided with the auto head-on.

The impact was so violent that the auto went airborne and crashed on the
road, killing the driver instantly. Passersby rescued the victims and admitted them to the hospital before alerting the Peenya traffic police.

The police have taken up a case and are probing the accident.
