City police shot and injured a rowdy sheeter who tried to wriggle free from police custody by attacking a head constable in Bellanduru on March 5.

Lokesh (24) is the prime accused in the murder of his rival Prashanth, who was killed on February 27. Police searched for Lokesh who went underground after the murder.

Following a tipoff from sources, a police team went to Tamil Nadu to arrest Lokesh and eight of his gang members and bring them to the city.

When cops were taking him for a spot inspection on March 5, Lokesh launched an escape bid by attacking head constable Ravishankar. The cop suffered injuries to his hand.

At first, police inspector Girish shot in the air. But when the captive continued with his escape bid, he had no choice but to shoot him on the leg and immobilise him. “The accused man and the injured head constable were shifted to a hospital. Lokesh will be handed over to Banaswadi police for a probe in several cases pending against him,” said Abdul Ahad, DCP for Whitefield division.
