Say No to Plastic campaign kicks off

Last Updated 01 September 2009, 19:11 IST

As part of the campaign, formally flagged off by former Chief Justice M N Venkatachaliah, Green Commandos will engage local people in their respective areas to make their neighbourhood plastic-free. Each area will range approximately 2 km with 1,000-1,200 people being pulled into the programme at each location.

‘Say No to Plastic’ is the first project by the Green Commandos in Bangalore. Athlete Ashwini Nachappa, who participated in the launch, said since the time she associated herself with Green Commandos, she has reduce the use of plastic.

Rama N S, former-head Infosys Bangalore Development Centre wondered that if we had survived without plastic 30 years ago, then why couldn’t we now. TV anchor, Charu Sharma said that if we stop using plastic, it should be complimented by the availability of cloth/jute bags.

Set an example
“You are thought of as being weird if you adamantly refused to take plastic bags at a store. But by doing so, the person standing behind you at the counter will notice your action and certainly think about it. You might be the cause for bringing about this change as well,” he said. On the occasion, an unique ‘Family green report card’ was also launched. This report card will be circulated in schools in Bangalore, wherein the children will be asked to fill it on a daily basis. At the month end, the student with most eco-fit replies would get some motivational reward.
