Break the barriers of caste and grow beyond: Mevani

Last Updated 13 July 2018, 19:43 IST

The country’s development in capital terms does not mean anything unless the condition of the working class is improved in the country, Gujarat MLA from the Vadagam district in Gujarat, Jignesh Mevani said.

He was speaking at a seminar on ‘The power of youth in Indian Politics’ at the St Aloysius Degree College in Cox Town on Friday. “It is unfortunate that people hardly talk about the working class in our country. If we continue like this, history will not forgive us,” Mevani said.

“The most dangerous thing to happen in our country is the distortion of the labour laws. For instance, there is the concept of ‘Vibrant Gujarat’, but, inside the very assembly building where the MLAs debate, the civic workers and security guards are not paid even the minimum wages,” he said.

He also posed a question to Prime Minister Narendra Modi: “Has Modi ever empathised with the farmers of the country, especially with those who have committed suicide?”

Mevani also claimed that Modi has misled the youth of the country.

“Modi said that he will provide jobs to two crore people. But, hardly seven lakh jobs were created in the past four years. Even his promises of making 100 smart cities in the country is not kept,” Mevani added.

He also accused Modi and the RSS of creating communal hatred among people of India. “The RSS will talk about love jihad, but we should talk of inter-social and inter-caste marriages and spread love. That is what B R Ambedkar said while framing the constitution. We have to break the barriers of caste and grow beyond
them.”
