Two held for betting at Chinnaswamy Stadium

Last Updated 29 August 2018, 19:23 IST

The police have arrested two persons involved in betting from the Chinnaswamy Stadium during a junior-level cricket match between South Africa A and India A on August 27.

The arrested have been identified as Ricky Veeramani (31), of Haryana, and Mayank Surana (25), of Rajasthan. The police have seized a cellphone like device, a Wi-Fi router and a headphone from them.

DCP Central Division D Devaraj said the two had booked tickets online for the match on the same day and were seated at the P-3 stand. While the match was going on, officials of the BCCI Anti-Corruption Unit at the stadium noticed one of them wearing a headphone busily keying in something on his phone.

BCCI personnel Dheeraj Malhotra questioned Ricky and found that he was passing on information about the match to some contacts in Haryana and Rajasthan, whom the police suspect to be bookies. The information was being passed through the cell-phone like device. The Cubbon Park police arrested the duo.

The two were sending match information instantly to bookies, before the usual 40-second time gap it takes for live information to go online.
