The doctor, Dr Vishal Vanne, is a resident doctor who was attending on the patient during his night duty. The incident happened at the Lotus Hospital in Vashi in Navi Mumbai on Saturday night.

The victim was admitted to hospital on Saturday after she complained of “not feeling well” after attending a “dandia” event with her husband. She was kept under observation as she was suffering from low blood pressure. Vashi division assistant commissioner of police Purshottam Karad said the woman was semi-conscious.

“She told the police that she was too weak to resist the doctor’s moves,” he said. According to the 30-year-old victim, who lives at Koparkhiarane in Navi Mumbai, there were just one or two patients in the room.

They were fast asleep since they were under medication. There weren’t many staff members because of Dasara. The patient’s husband said the accused told him that his wife was fine and asked him to take rest.

The accused was arrested on Monday and the Vashi police have registered a case under Section 307 against him. “We have sent the accused and the woman for a medical test at the NMMC hospital in Vashi. We can establish the facts only when we get the medical reports,” senior police inspector Raosaheb Sardesai said.

Hospital authorities refused to comment saying they had cooperated with the police and had informed them when they received the complaint. They confirmed that the ICU had two patients and two female staff––a nurse and a domestic helper.

Between 4:15 and 4:45 am on Sunday, the nurse suffered an asthma attack and had to be taken to the general ward by the helper. It’s during this period that the doctor, believes the patient’s husband, raped his wife.
