"It is a considerable contribution", NIS Executive Director L S Ranawat claimed today.

"Apart from our role in sports academics, contribution towards training of our national teams, for international competitions are no less important," Ranawat told PTI. Out of the total 38 gold, 27 silver and 36 bronze medals won by India, those trained at Patiala, have contributed 11 gold, eight silver and 19 bronze, he said.

The Institute was given the responsibility of managing the national coaching camps for athletics, boxing, cycling, table tennis, weightlifting, women's wrestling and women's hockey.

In the athletics, the complete capture of the podiums by the trio of Krishna Punia, Harwant Kaur and Seema Antil helped India end medal drought in these disciplines. The Institute is now gearing itself for grooming the national teams for Asian Games to be held at Guangzhou, China from November 12-27.
