Testing cognitive abilities made easy

Last Updated 03 November 2010, 13:15 IST

This test can be administered to people in the age group of 16-90 years 11 months. WAIS-IV encompasses changes in cognitive abilities across this age range.

Research and theoretical advances in Cognitive Psychology, Neuropsychology and Developmental Psychology (including the study of aging) continue to provide guideposts for both - what we assess and how we assess.

Ever-increasing psychometric sophistication offers an increased capacity to measure intelligence with sensitivity, precision, and economy of time.

It is impressive that something as complex as intelligence can be captured by 10 subtests in about an hour of the client's and clinician's time.

WAIS-IV can be used as an instrument for assessing intellectual functioning. It can be used as a psycho-educational tool to obtain a comprehensive assessment of general cognitive functioning, as part of an assessment to identify learning difficulties, intellectual giftedness and cognitive strengths and weaknesses in examinees with a variety of neurological conditions. It serves as a guide for treatment planning and placement decisions, to supply invaluable clinical information for academic and neuropsychological evaluations.

In turn, results are used to aid in differential diagnosis, premorbid (prior to mental illness) intelligence, guide future predictions (eg., job success), and provide the psychologist, client, and others with a meaningful understanding of cognitive abilities. WAIS-IV is a theoretically advanced, well researched, and more updated assessment tool for cognitive assessment.

Psychology students get to learn about psychological tests in their practical classes. However, they are not privileged to have hands-on experience when it comes to practical experience.

Students learn the tests based on the requirement for exams. With the objective of creating awareness about the advantages of such tests and to sensitise students of Psychology, Pearson Clinical Assessment, through its workshops, provides these students an opportunity to learn the tests both theoretically and practically.

The workshop stresses on WAIS-IV’s applications, both research and clinical, and offers practical demonstration using a subject for test administration.
