More than 1,300 houses have been damaged due to the rain that battered the district since Monday night. Groundnut in 800 hectares and paddy in 60 hectares have been damaged due to the downpour over the past three days.

Forty families have been shifted to a safer place in Hirekere, Holalkere taluk.

Risk factor

The untimely rain has cast a shadow on the cotton yield in Hubli-Dharwad. While some portion of the crop has been washed away some have suffered pest attack.

Dharwad tops the State in cotton production. Farmers were drawn to the crop due to the buoyant prices last year. The price hovered around Rs 3,200 per quintal.

The crop is also grown extensively in Haveri, Gadag, Raichur and Davangere district and the area under cotton cultivation has increased significantly this year, according to Cotton Corporation of India officer, Ramalingam.

He said the untimely rain may bring down the yield by about 15 per cent.
