Trouble started when district Congress vice-president Siraj Ahmed mistook RSS and BJP workers as his party men. Ahmed arrived at the place where the local Congress unit was to stage a protest against former RSS chief K S Sudarshan’s recent remarks against their party chief Sonia Gandhi.

In a bid to thwart the Congress men, a group of RSS and BJP activists converged at ‘Madhava Krupa’ to give a fitting reply.

Brandishing the party flag, Siraj had taken a few steps, when he was attacked by the saffron party cadres. He was beaten up so badly, that he had to make himself scarce.
Siraj ran towards Ballal Circle, while his car driver managed to get away to a safe distance. But the BJP workers gave chase, catching up with the car which they damaged. Soon after, former Krishnaraja MLA M K Somashekar reached the spot, but sensing trouble retraced his steps.

Interestingly enough, when the Congress workers regrouped under Somashekar and Siraj, the posse of policemen, who watched as mute spectators the RSS-BJP atttack on Siraj, swung into action stopping them them at a distance.
As the protesters did not relent, they were bundled into a van and taken away to CAR police grounds. Police sources said all 25 Congressmen were detained and released later.

Lakshmipuram police have registered a case.

On the other hand, Janata Dal  (Secular) workers who were staging protest in front of Gandhi’s bust opposite the Law Court’s complex, but against the chief minister’s programme, were also taken into custody only to be released after some time.
