The Karnataka lass stopped the clock at two minutes 18.86 seconds to erase the best Indian time of 2:19.58 set by Richa Mishra at the World Swimming Championship in Barcelona 2003. China's Lui Lan, who clocked 2:14.13, took the gold medal. The 15-year-old Arhatha managed to squeeze past bronze-medallist Zhang Qi of China by one hundreth of a second.

However, another Karnataka swimmer Gagan A P was placed fourth clocking 4:05.95 in 400 free. Aaron D’Souza also disappoints finishing fourth with a time of 2:03.65 in the 200 fly.  Aaron (2:07.88) and Arhatha (2:22.19) in the 200 butterfly events and Gagan in the 400 free (4:05.95) went past the Youth Olympics ‘B’ qualifying mark.

Meanwhile, Rohit Kumar clinched gold in the boys’ javelin throw as India added three more medals to their kitty.

Rohit hurled the javelin for a personal best of 74.60 metres, which bettered his previous mark of 71.52 that he set at the Junior Nationals in Mysore last year. Selwyn Jebaraj clocked 54.41 seconds in the boys 400M hurdles to bag the silver while China’s Chen Dong (53.19) walked away with the gold medal in this event.

In the corresponding event in the girls section, Sushma Mekala clinched bronze with a timing of 1:03.44.
