'50 died due to AIDS in 18 months in Kodagu district'

The data obtained from ART Centre of the district hospital shows that 50 people have lost their lives in the district owing to AIDS from June 2009 onwards.

Out of 451 HIV affected, who have enrolled their names in the ART Centre, 242 people are undergoing ART treatment. 

Informing the same to the media persons, District AIDS Controlling Officer Dr K G Siddhaiah and District AIDS Supervising Officer Sunitha said that a population of 36,812 from the general category have undergone HIV counselling and tests between 2002 and 2010.

As many as 39,570 pregnant women and 1,397 HIV affected have undergone HIV counselling and tests.

Between 2003 and October 2010, a total of 92 HIV affected pregnant women gave birth to babies. Nevarpin, preventive drugs, were administered to children to prevent the transmission of the disease.

HIV affected are given treatment at 11 ICTC centres, 6 primary health centres, mobile ICTC centre and ART Treatment Centre at the district hospital, informed Siddaiah.

The percentage of HIV infected people in the district is 0.75 per cent. The government has introduced National AIDS Prevention Programme-3, which is aimed at controlling the spread of AIDS disease by 2012.

Under this programme, a decentralised mode of functioning will be followed to control AIDS at the grassroot level, he added.

World AIDS Day

The World AIDS Day will be observed at Cauveri Kalakshethra of Madikeri on December 1.

The programme will be organised by the District Health and Family Welfare Department, District Legal Services Authority. An AIDS awareness campaign will also be held on the occasion.
