But none of the controversies have bogged the actress down. Calm and composed, she is all smiles during a tete-a-tete with Metrolife. “Enough and more has been said about my comments on Karan Johar’s show. I don’t see any point in making such a huge mountain out of a mole hill,” says Deepika, who was recently in the City to promote her latest film Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey (KHJJS).

The promotion was a special one for her, especially since it was in her hometown. She is blatant about the fact that she is not completely fluent in Kannada but manages to speak a few lines. “One thing is for sure, I can never forget where I come from. I love Bangalore and after all, it’s the place where my film career started. When I was told that we would be promoting the film in my home city, I was more than happy,” says Deepika,  whose was first seen in Aishwarya.

So why haven’t we seen her in any other Kannada film? “I have been busy in Bollywood but that does not mean I have completely shut myself off Kannada films. A good script will surely get me back here but not at the moment as my hands are full,” she says.

Playing the role of a real life revolutionary Kalpana Dutta in KHJJS for her was a
challenge especially since she was constrained by the story the film was based on.
But what made it even more interesting was the uncanny resemblance she had to the real Kalpana.

When asked if it was the director Ashutosh Gowariker, script or her role that made her say yes to the project, she answers, “It was a combination of all. It is important to know who is making the film and no doubt getting Ashutosh as a director this early in my career was an added bonus.” Known for her glamourous avatar, Deepika says that she had no inhibitions on going de-glam for the role.  “The sari was glamourous,” she laughs while adding, “I have never considered any role as ‘glamourous’ or ‘non-glamourous’ one. With every growing role, I only hope on giving my best and do films that I will be proud of.”
