Member of Legislative Council Y A Narayanaswamy has asked the Agricultural Produces Marketing Committee to provide basic facilities necessary for farmers and traders at the APMC yard in the town.

Speaking to reporters after inspecting the newly started mango trading facility at the APMC yard here on Tuesday, the MLC suggested APMC to provide basic facilities such as water, power, toilets apart from improving road and drainage system at the yard.

“Trading in mango has commenced at the APMC from this year, thus meeting a long-standing demand of the farmers. Commission agents and traders should conduct business safeguarding the interest of farmers and without giving room for any disputes,” he said.

Observing that mango growers have sufferred extensive damage on account of hailstorm and gusty winds that hit some parts of the taluk recently, the MLC demanded the government to compensate the farmers for the loss sustained, at the rate of at least Rs 25,000 per acre.

He later met the mango traders individually and heard their grievances. The MLC promised to ensure basic facilities at the yard.
