ST status for six Assam tribes sought

Last Updated 09 January 2011, 19:15 IST

The tribes are concentrated in Assam for which the BJP national executive meeting here demanded ST status from the Central government.

The party said if voted to power in the state, it could vigorously pursue the issue and get it implemented.

Stating that  the North-East had been looked at as a “milking-cow” by the successive Congress governments, the party said the region had to wait till the installation of the NDA government to have an independent department of North-East region.

The party has set up a Group of policy researchers to prepare a North-East India vision document 2025, expected to be released by end of February.

At the organisational level, the party has established an “independent North-East Sampark Cell” to help create informal help centres in metro-cities where North-East students are studying in large numbers. Cities like Bangalore have a large concentration of North-East students.

The party  recollected that sportspersons from the region had won several medals for the country in recently held Commonwealth Games and Asian Games.
