The cub born on December 1 last year to Sneha and Mohan at the BBP, was ailing since its birth, said the authorities.

The cub was separated from its mother as the tigress behaved strangely. The authorities said: “Sneha nursed the cub well till December 19. But later she seemed restless and anxious. Sneha used to carry the cub in her mouth and move restlessly in her holding house. At times, she swung and tossed the cub.”

Milo Tago, BBP executive director said the cub was taken to the Zoo Hospital and kept under observation for the past 23 days. Nothing much could be done as the animal was weak, undernourished and was suffering from neurological problems — it tilted its head and neck and had an epileptic fit.

“Even a team of experts from the Institute of Animal Health and Veterinary Biologicals and the Veterinary College, Hebbal, examined the cub,” the executive director said. The post mortem report revealed that the cause of death was acute pneumonia coupled with peritonitis.
