Poncha sets his eyes on Olympics qualification

Last Updated 19 January 2011, 16:38 IST

“This is the pre-Olympic year and this is a good time to start training. The Olympic association has already set us a qualifying time of 2:01.00 for the 200M butterfly event and I have already gone below that once in 2009.

“I just need to repeat the performance to get through to the London Olympics but I also want to make it to the semifinals,” said Poncha, on the sidelines of a press meet here on Wednesday.

“My aim to is to get as fit as possible so that when I get into the pool, things are much better. I’m also planning to go for a qualifying event either in Asia or Europe or the US as early as possble because last time around (Beijing) I had a tough time,” he added.

Talking about the pre-season programme, Poncha said: “I’m also planning to go and train in the US for two months. They have a very good programme there and it should help me get in shape.”
