The screening and discussion of the movie Gulabi Talkies, which was selected for the 10th Osian's Cinefan Festival, was held at the Badami House, here on Sunday. The director of the film, Girish Kasaravalli, was present at the programme, organised jointly by ART and Book Port. The film revolves around the midwife Gulabi, whose husband had abandoned her and is living with his second wife. Gulabi (Umashree) is a movie addict and loves to see every movie released in the nearby theatre. She gets a colour television which in turn changes the lives of the villagers.

Girish narrated the difficulties he came across while completing the film. “We had to take into account events like the communal disharmony that coastal Karnataka had faced and many more things while shooting for the film,” he said. The film touches the lives of fishermen in coastal Karnataka, and the communal tension that prevailed during the late 1990s.

“We wanted to bring out the culture and tradition in our City,” said Anupama Garimella, Managing Trustee of the ART. “This is the reason why we selected Gulabi Talkies,” she added. Film critic Mamtha Sagar, Manoj Chakraverthi and Tejaswani were present at the discussion.

Girish Kasaravalli informed that he was working on a new project based on another Kannada short story. Though he did not reveal the details, he said the storyline would deal with the ‘dreams’ of a person.
