Israr Malik was apprehended from Delhi-Ghaziabad Apsara border yesterday in North-East Delhi following investigations into the murder of the driver Sandeep Mandal, S K Jain, Deputy Commissioner of Police, said.

Mandal was missing since January 31 and his vehicle was recovered from Simbhawali in Uttar Pradesh.

"Since the car was found in UP, suspicion was on criminals having links in Meerut and Ghaziabad. We got information that Malik who is a driver by profession was seen in the vehicle with three other companions," Jain said.

During interrogation, Jain said, Malik told police that he wanted "to flaunt the car to impress girls".

"For this purpose he planned to hijack a luxary car alongwith his three companions. On January 30, all the four came at Ashram Chowk and in the night, they spotted Mandal in the car.

"They asked Mandal for a lift up to Dhaula Kuan. The driver asked for Rs ten from each of them and all the four boarded. After sometime, one of them asked Mandal to stop the car. They then pulled the driver out and Malik took control of the vehicle," Jain said.

They allegedly struck Mandal on the head and strangled him before dumping his body in Karhedda in UP.
