NCTE develops code of professional ethics for teachers

Special attention has been given to the issue of emotional and mental protection of the students from any kind of physical or mental harassment, NCTE President Mohammed Akhtar Siddiqui said.

The code of conduct has been developed in accordance with the guidelines of National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR).

Suggestions from World Bank, All India Primary Teachers' Federation (AIPTF) and state government has also been incorporated in the development of this code, he said.

Condemning the incidents of students harassment and punishment, Siddiqui said the code provides a framework of principles that would guide teachers in discharging their obligations towards students, parents and other stakeholders.

The code created by a committee constituted under the Chairmanship of Prof A K Sharma, former Director, National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), has also stressed upon maintaining healthy relationship between teachers and students.

The code which will be implemented in collaboration with the associations and federations of school teachers will also look into the students rights, discipline among them and organise talent exposure programmes.

NCTE has also asked the teachers to study the United Nations declaration on child rights to which India is a signatory.
