Debutant Bhullar cards 71

After the 21-year-old Kapurthala pro had parred the opening hole, things went terribly wrong and he dropped a triple bogey on the par-fourth second, followed by the third hole bogey.

The birdie he fired on the fourth hole did snap the stroke-dropping streak but he bogeyed the fifth to go four-over after just five holes.

Bhullar parred the sixth hole to calm his nerves before finishing the front nine in style, reeling off three successive birdies to take the turn at one-over.

His back nine journey too got off to a poor start as Bhullar bogeyed the 10th and double bogeyed the par-four 14th hole to go four-over before another bridie hat-trick put his campaign back on track.

Bhullar signed off parring the final hole to settle for a card of 71 and join the likes of Tiger Woods, Luke Donald, Adam Scott, David Duval and Henrik Stenson. “I was nervous in the morning, but after some yoga I was calm,” Bhullar said. “After the early shaky start, I realised the greens were much faster than when I had played previously over last two weeks. I fought back and got those three birdies towards the end of the front nine. But then maybe I was trying too hard and again dropped a bogey on 10th and a double on 14th. Still I did not give up,” said Bhullar. “I am proud of the way I fought.”
