'None want their children to be farmers'

Last Updated 17 March 2011, 21:51 IST

Speaking at the inauguration of a seminar on ‘Achievements in Agriculture’ on Saturday, Puttannaiah said even the so-called legislation on Food Security was bereft of any policy framework for farmers. The farmers who constitute 70 per cent of the population lack security in the country.

“Everyone needs food and clothes, which only farmers can provide. But none want their children to be farmers,” he remarked.

Puttannaiah said farmers need only water, electricity, quality seeds and better price for their produce and do not require any committee to fix minimum support price for farm produce. He claimed that it’s the farmers who have protected the Kannada culture and literature through “janapada” (folklore).
