The Mysore Medical College and Research Institute (MMC& RI) has been making all preparations to start a college of nursing in the city from this academic year. If things go according to plan, the admission process for BSc Nursing will begin in June.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Dean, MMC&RI and Superintendent of Krishnarajendra Hospital (KRH) Dr Geetha K Avadhani said that Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) has given permission to start the college of nursing, accepting its long pending demand.

Earlier, the MMC&RI had a nursing school and offered Diploma in nursing for about 40 students.

Starting this college would help provide better treatment and service to the patients of K R Hospital and Cheluvamba Hospital, with some students being employed here after completion of course.

Besides, it helps nurses access higher education and training too. Mysore will be the fourth city to have a college of nursing in the State. The other cities that have college of nursing are Hassan, Bangalore and Bellary, she said.

Preparations have been going on to start teaching classes for B Sc Nursing at the second floor of exhibition building in MMC&RI premises.

Chairs and tables are being procured while construction of toilets, classrooms and other works of infrastructure improvement are going on full speed.

The MMC&RI has sought permission to provide admissions to 100 students for first year in B Sc Nursing course.

The duration of the course is four years. Students will be selected purely on  merit basis. Dr Geetha Avadhani said that she had sought the permission from Nursing Council of Karnataka and Nursing Council of India.

The permission from these reputed institutions is mandatory to start the course.
The representatives of both councils will visit the college shortly to inspect the infrastructure facilities and grant the permission to offer the course from this academic year.

Feasibility certificate

The Dean also said that the permission has also been sought from Government of Karnataka to provide feasibility certificate (FC) and essential certificate (EC), which is mandatory to open the college of nursing.

This will be given within few days from the State Government.
The MMC&RI is also contemplating to offer MSc Nursing course after four years of completion of BSc Nursing.

Dr Geetha K Avadhani said that MMC&RI has also planned to construct state-of-the- art college of nursing and hostel for students at PKTB Sanatorium premises located on KRS road in city.

The proposal of ` 12 crore for the construction of buildings for college of nursing and hostel is pending before the Government of Karnataka. Steps will be taken for the construction of the college of nursing soon after the approval from the Government.
